Heritage
Local tradition names Rara within the cultural landscape of the Khasa kingdom. King Mahendra's 1960 visit popularised the lake as Mahendra Tal. Today Rara National Park protects red pandas, Himalayan black bear, and endemic trout in Nepal's most remote protected area.
