Gorkha Durbar crowns a steep ridge above the town bazaar. The fortified palace, Hanuman gate, and Kalika Temple formed the spiritual and political heart of the Gorkha kingdom. Prithvi Narayan Shah was born here in 1723 and later launched the campaigns that unified dozens of baise and chaubise principalities into one nation.
